Kanda Naal Mudhal modhal and therefore, in cliched Tamil movie fashion, the kaadhal has to follow. Produced by Prakash Raj’s Duet movies, starring its brand ambassador Prasanna, dimples Laila and Evam’s Karthik Kumar, Kanda Naal Mudhal is a cute movie. It takes a standard storyline and spruces it up with neat screenplay and nifty dialogues. In fact, this movie is all about fitting dialogues - fit, refit, retrofit.
Prasanna and Laila meet each other in childhood, get on the warparth and continue their animosity when they renew acquaintance in adulthood. Enter Karthik, Prasanna’s friend and Laila’s prospective groom, and we have the main components of a love triangle in place. Karthik and Laila get engaged to each other, Karthik flies off to the US, Prasanna is right there when Laila needs help and what happens after that forms the rest of this movie.
Kanda Naal Mudhal appears to be targeted at a young working crowd and Priya V., the director, has created her characters with a touch of realism. There are no long-haired scary villians, no dishum-dishum scenes but, before you ask, there are lots of dream songs thrust into the narrative because the movie has to run for 2+ hours you see. Revathy stars as Laila’s mother in this movie, and I for one, cannot stand Revathy being wasted. She does justice to her character but I could not help wishing that she had a more meaty part to play. Lakshmi, yet another brilliant actress, is cast as Karthik’s mother and she has a few scenes to stamp her mark. The fathers in this movie are all endearing and their characters have been sketched well. Devadarshini, as Prasanna’s sister, does well. So does the newcomer who plays Laila’s sister. The musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja has been making its rounds for a few months now, so you know which songs to expect when.
Last Word: Don’t expect much. Go to this movie, sit back, laugh and return entertained.
